The 2008 version of the Conservation Medicine postgraduate course finished last Friday 31sth of October. This year we had a female-majority of students and a large (5) representation of M. Sc students reading for fisheries, oceanic and aquatic parasitology. The other 3 students are reading terrestrial ecology, ornithology and wildlife management. Alexander Blanco from Venezuela and Guillermo Castillo, academic technician of our department in Campeche were the only two "male specimens" in the group. Of the female representation we had Cuevas Zimbrón Elizabeth, Cupiche Herrera Vianney Janice, Gutiérrez Díaz María Eugenia, Ramírez Mosqueda Edith, Segura Berttolini Elsy Consuelo and Paredes Trujillo Amelia Isabel.The two field practices were performed in Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve, trapping crocodiles for the handling and management of biological samples with the help of former graduate student Sergio Padilla and in Calakmul where we collected road-killed wildlife for the practice of wildlife necropsy techniques and visited the cave bat for an interesting exercise of bat mortality and epidemiologic risk assessment.
This was a very nice, hard-working and brilliant group of students. The brilliant participation and experience of Alex Blanco and his very South-American sense of humour marked the course with laughs and fun.

La versión 2008 del curso de posgrado en Medicina de la Conservación terminó con mucho éxito el 31 de Octubre pasado. Este año contamos con una agradable mayoría femenina en el grupo y a demás con 5 estudiantes con un enfoque a los sistemas acuáticos (pesquerías, parasitología marina o de peces y oceanología). Solo tres estudiantes del área terrestre, incluyendo ornitología, manejo de visa silvestre y ecología terrestre. Las estudiantes fueron Cuevas Zimbrón Elizabeth, Cupiche Herrera Vianney Janice, Gutiérrez Díaz María Eugenia, Ramírez Mosqueda Edith, Segura Berttolini Elsy Consuelo and Paredes Trujillo Amelia Isabel. Por parte de los varones tuvimos a Guillermo Castillo que es nuestro técnico de biodiversidad y manejo de fauna en Campeche y a Alex Blanco, estudiante externo de Venezuela.
Las prácticas se llevaron a al cabo en la Reserva de los Petenes, para el manejo y procesamiento de muestras biológicas de cocodrilos silvestres y luego en Calakmul para realizar necropsias de fauna atropellada en las carreteras y visitamos la cueva de los murcielagos para un ejercicio de muetreo de moratilidad y estimación de riesgo epidemiológico.
Este ha sido uno de los mejores grupos de posgrado que he tenido, con estudiantes inteligentes que trabajaron duro y en forma excelente. El buen humor y la experiencia de Alex Blanco fueron un toque extra que dio diversión y risas al curso. Al final hicimos una fiesta en mi casa por demás divertida. Gracias a todos!
